Care guide

Overview

Blue Dream Shrimp are a selectively bred colour line of Neocaridina davidi — the same species as cherry shrimp. The name describes the deep, solid royal blue the best specimens carry across the whole body. An excellent first invertebrate and a peaceful cleanup crew that harms no other livestock.

Natural Habitat

Neocaridina davidi originates in the streams and ponds of Taiwan and mainland China, grazing biofilm from rocks, wood, and plants. Blue Dream is a hobby-bred colour form of that hardy species.

Tank Setup

A heavily planted tank with mosses, driftwood, and leaf litter is ideal — the more surface area, the more biofilm to graze. A 5-gallon (~20 L) is the minimum and 10-plus suits a thriving colony. A sponge filter is safest; cover any HOB or canister intake so juveniles are not drawn in.

Diet

An omnivorous detritivore that grazes constantly on biofilm and algae. Supplement two or three times a week with a quality shrimp food, blanched vegetables, or Indian almond leaves. Never overfeed — uneaten food crashes water quality faster than anything else in a small tank.

Temperament & Tankmates

Completely peaceful. A species tank is best for breeding, since juveniles are eaten in a community. Safe companions include Otocinclus, small rasboras, pygmy Corydoras, and endlers. Avoid bettas, gouramis, angelfish, most tetras, cichlids, and assassin snails.
