Care guide

Overview

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) has saved more beginner aquariums than any other plant. It thrives in low light, needs no CO2, and is almost impossible to kill once settled. The one rule: never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue it to hardscape and it slowly spreads into a lush green hand of leaves.

Natural Habitat

Native to Southeast Asia, where it grows attached to rocks and roots along streams and waterfalls, often emersed in fast, shaded, humid conditions.

Planting & Placement

Attach the rhizome to driftwood or stone with thread or a dab of super glue gel, or wedge it into a crevice — never bury it in substrate, or it rots. The roots grip surfaces on their own within a few weeks. Ideal for bare-bottom tanks and tanks with diggers.

Lighting & CO2

Low to medium light is best; under bright light it grows algae on its slow leaves rather than growing faster. No CO2 needed. It feeds from the water column, so in a stocked tank it usually needs nothing extra.

Aquascape Role & Tankmates

A midground plant on hardscape, and tough enough for cichlids, goldfish, and other plant-uprooters that would destroy rooted species. Completely safe with all fish, shrimp, and snails.

Propagation

Two easy ways: cut the rhizome into pieces, each with a few leaves and roots, or let the plant do it — the small black bumps on mature leaves are baby plantlets. Detach them at an inch or two and attach them anywhere.

Approximate Shipping Size

Java Fern ships as an established plant of approximately 4–6 inch (10–15 cm) with several leaves on a healthy rhizome. All orders are covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee.
