Care guide

Overview

The KOI Angelfish is a captive-bred colour morph of Pterophyllum scalare, marbled in bold orange, black, and white like its namesake Japanese Koi. Tall, graceful, and full of presence, it makes an unforgettable centerpiece for a deep community aquarium.

Natural Habitat

The wild ancestor inhabits slow, warm, densely-vegetated waters of the Amazon basin, drifting among vertical roots and tall stem plants that its body shape mirrors perfectly.

Tank Setup

Angelfish need height — a tall tank of 30 gallons (~115 L) or more with tall plants, driftwood, and vertical structure. Warm, soft to moderately-hard water and gentle flow suit them best.

Diet

An omnivore taking quality flake and pellet, enthusiastically supplemented with frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Vary the diet for strong colour and finnage.

Temperament & Tankmates

Peaceful for a cichlid, but a predator of very small fish — avoid keeping with adult Neons or dwarf shrimp. Good companions include larger tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and peaceful gouramis. Angels can be territorial with their own kind when pairing.

Approximate Shipping Size

KOI Angelfish ship at approximately 1.5–2 inch (4–5 cm) body. Adult body size reaches approximately 6 inch (15 cm) with finnage taller. All orders are covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee.
