Overview
The Alpha Swordtail Albino Red (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a brilliantly colored, selectively bred strain of the classic livebearing swordtail. The “Alpha” line is prized for its deeper, more uniform red coloration and robust, full body shape, while the albino trait gives this variety its striking pink-white eyes. Active, peaceful, and easy to keep, it’s an outstanding choice for community aquariums and a favorite among livebearer enthusiasts.
Natural Habitat
Wild-type swordtails originate from the warm, mineral-rich streams and rivers of southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, where they inhabit slow- to medium-flow waters densely planted with aquatic vegetation. The Alpha Albino Red is a domestic strain produced entirely through generations of selective breeding for color, finnage, and body shape; it is not found in the wild.
Tank Setup
A 20-gallon tank is a sensible minimum for a small group, with 29–30 gallons or larger recommended for a long, active swimmer like the swordtail. Provide open swimming space in the middle and upper levels, along with planted areas and gentle hiding spots to break sightlines between males. A secure lid is essential, as swordtails are strong jumpers. Moderate filtration with gentle to moderate flow mimics their natural stream environment, and harder, alkaline water suits them best.
Diet
Swordtails are omnivores with a notable preference for vegetable matter. Feed a varied diet of high-quality flake or micro-pellets, supplemented with spirulina, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and occasional protein treats such as live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily, only what they can finish in about a minute.
Temperament & Tankmates
Generally peaceful and social, though males can become territorial toward each other. The recommended stocking ratio is 1 male to 2–3 females to disperse breeding attention and reduce stress. Excellent tankmates include platies, mollies, guppies, peaceful tetras, corydoras, otocinclus, dwarf rasboras, and most peaceful community species that share their water-hardness preference. Avoid fin-nippers and aggressive cichlids.

Approximate shipping size is 1–1.5 in (2.5–4 cm). Sex cannot be guaranteed at shipping size unless specifically noted; please contact us for sexed pairs or trios when available.
