Overview

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most iconic and beloved freshwater aquarium fish in the hobby. Renowned for its brilliant iridescent blue lateral stripe and vivid red posterior, this small, peaceful schooling tetra brings movement, color, and life to community aquariums. First described in 1936 and named for American aquarist William T. Innes, the Neon Tetra remains a top choice for both beginners and seasoned aquarists thanks to its hardiness when sourced from quality stock, modest care requirements, and dazzling appearance under appropriate lighting.

Natural Habitat

Neon Tetras are native to the Upper Amazon basin of South America, occurring across western Brazil, eastern Peru, and southeastern Colombia. They inhabit forest streams and minor tributaries of the Solimões, Putumayo, Purus, Javary, Marañón, and Napo river systems rather than the turbid main channels. Their native waters are typically shaded, slow-moving, and stained dark brown by tannins released from decomposing leaf litter and submerged wood. The substrate is generally a mix of fine sand, fallen branches, tree roots, and leaf litter, with negligible carbonate hardness and very soft, acidic conditions.

Tank Setup

A 20-gallon (~75 L) aquarium is the recommended minimum for a proper school of Neon Tetras, providing the horizontal swimming space they need to display natural schooling behavior. Replicate their native blackwater environment with a fine sand substrate, plenty of driftwood, twisted roots, and dried Indian almond (catappa) or oak leaves. Dim lighting brings out their iridescent colors and reduces stress. Live plants such as Microsorum, Cryptocoryne, Taxiphyllum (Java moss), and floating species like Ceratopteris (Water sprite) help diffuse light and offer cover. Filtration should be gentle to moderate with low to moderate flow.

Diet

Neon Tetras are micropredator omnivores. In the wild, they feed on tiny invertebrates, crustaceans, filamentous algae, and fallen fruit and plant matter. In the aquarium, offer a varied diet built around a high-quality micro-pellet or quality flake food, supplemented several times per week with live and frozen options such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, microworms, and crushed bloodworm. A varied diet enhances color and supports long-term health. Feed small amounts two to three times daily, only what is consumed within two minutes.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 70–77 °F (21–25 °C). pH: 6.0–7.0. GH: 1–10 dGH (very soft to moderately soft, ~18–180 ppm). KH: 0–4 dKH. While Neon Tetras tolerate a wide range of conditions thanks to generations of commercial breeding, they thrive and color up best in soft, slightly acidic water that mirrors their native blackwater habitat. Stability matters more than chasing exact numbers — avoid sudden swings. Weekly water changes of 20–30% with dechlorinated water keep them at their best.

Temperament & Tankmates

The Neon Tetra is a peaceful, gregarious schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least 8–10 individuals — larger groups produce more confident behavior and a more spectacular display. Ideal tankmates include other small, peaceful community species: Ember Tetras, Rummynose Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Pygmy Corydoras and other small Corydoras species, Otocinclus, small loricariid catfish, Hatchetfish, Pencilfish, and dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma and German Rams. Avoid larger, fin-nipping, or predatory species (Angelfish in particular will eat adult Neons), as well as aggressive or boisterous tankmates.

Breeding

Breeding Neon Tetras requires a dedicated, very dimly lit spawning tank with soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, GH 1–5 dGH, temperature ~80–84 °F). Provide fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or spawning mops as an egg-deposit medium, or use a mesh base to protect eggs from the parents. Condition adults heavily on live foods. The fish can be spawned in small groups or as selected pairs; the most productive method uses a conditioned, isolated pair transferred to the spawning tank in the evening. Adults must be removed promptly after spawning as they will consume the eggs. Eggs hatch in 24–36 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming 3–4 days later. Both eggs and fry are highly light-sensitive — keep the tank in darkness during early development. Start fry on infusoria, progressing to microworms and baby brine shrimp.

Health & Acclimation

Neon Tetras are susceptible to “Neon Tetra Disease” (NTD), caused by the microsporidian parasite Pleistophora hyphessobryconis, which produces white muscle patches and abnormal swimming and is largely untreatable. A similar bacterial condition called columnaris (“false NTD”) presents almost identically but can be treated with appropriate antibacterial medications, so it is always worth isolating affected fish promptly. Quarantine new arrivals in a separate tank for 2–4 weeks before adding them to your main display.
